50. 23rd May, 1976. The UEFA Cup final between Liverpool and Borussia Moenchengladbach in Rotterdam is interrupted by a bomb threat from an unidentified caller on the public-address system. Police later discover that it was a hoax, but panic ensues when they announce over the PA that there has been no trace of explosives at the stadium so far. An estimated 40 minutes are lost before play can resume. As things turn out, however, this is the only time during which Gladbach have a chance to equalise. Liverpool go on to win the match 3-1, their first European trophy since 1965/66 - just three years after they last won the FA Cup.

In January 1975, as Nottingham Forest played Huddersfield Town away, referee Derek Bates stopped play with 40 seconds remaining due to “the most disgusting scenes you've ever seen” according to one observer: a mass brawl involving eight players and several fans involved in a dog fight. It took police officers half an hour to separate the two groups who were still swearing at each other. A second incident occurred towards the end of this season's game between Newcastle United and Burnley in February 1975 , also at the Reebok Stadium (then known as Bradley Park), when referee John Gwynne blew for full-time. When he re-emerged from his dressing room, he found himself surrounded by angry Burnley supporters. One player had to shield him with his body while a number of policemen dragged the irate crowds apart. This prompted Football Association chief executive Ted Croker to introduce an “orderly exit” rule requiring referees to leave the pitch directly behind the ball.
